► 14-volt power supply units - linear regulated
To provide an unregulated transformer power supply with a regulated output voltage, a transistor regulation circuit is implemented. The high voltage stability and the extremely low residual ripple are bought here by an unfavourable efficiency compared to other concepts. Linear regulated 14VDC power supplies have a high control accuracy and fast settling time. These 14V power supplies are excellently suited for supplying higher-quality electronic circuits where, among other things, low residual ripple is important.
► 14V Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS)
The 14V switched-mode power supply also converts the mains voltage into a regulated 14VDC output voltage, but has a higher efficiency and a smaller size. After filtering and rectification, the AC input voltage is converted into a high-frequency wave-shaped pulsating voltage by a pulse-width modulated semiconductor switch and transformed to the 14V voltage required on the secondary side by means of a transformer. It is then rectified and filtered again. The power supply units of higher power are all equipped with a Power Factor Correction (PFC).
