► 10 volt power supply units - linearly regulated
A transistor control circuit is implemented to provide an unregulated transformer power supply with a regulated output voltage. The high voltage stability and the extremely low residual ripple are bought at the price of an efficiency that is unfavorable compared to other concepts. Linearly regulated 10VDC power supplies have a high level of control accuracy and a fast settling time. These 10V power supplies are ideally suited for supplying high-quality electronic circuits where, among other things, low residual ripple is important.
► 10V Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS)
The 10V switched-mode power supply also converts the mains voltage into a regulated 10VDC output voltage, but has a higher degree of efficiency and a smaller size. After filtering and rectification, the AC input voltage is converted into a high-frequency, wave-like pulsating voltage using a pulse-width modulated semiconductor switch and transformed into the required 10V voltage on the secondary side by using a transformer. It is then rectified and filtered again. The higher-performance power supply units are all equipped with Power Factor Correction (PFC).
